Gulchin Azeez Muhammad Ameen, Qais Kakl Tofiq

Hence, it focuses on the way of reflecting conceptual metaphor of time in Kurdish. The data of the study have been taken from the daily use conversations of the Central Kurdish speakers. The study draws upon cognitive models of time for the analysis of the data within the framework of cognitive semantics which is proposed by Lakoff and Johnson. Moreover, the study identifies the way of reflecting experience as a basic principle of cognitive semantic on the Kurdish individual thoughts as well as the influence of human perception and self-perceptions in Kurdish expressions in which time moving and ego depletion vice versa are shown in a balanced way. Additionally, the way of time perception which is measured by time duration and changing (lengthening and shortening) in terms of inner sensory experience and individual perception is another point presented in this study, along with unfolding the location of temporary events according to time series model and comparing with each other.
Volume 12 · Issue 5 · October 2025Domains in Kurdish Family-Related Proverbs
Kobeen R. Mustafa, Zeki S. Ali Hamawand
The current study investigates cognitive domains in selected Kurdish proverbs. A cognitive domain refers to a context of knowledge background that is essential for understanding meaning. Since Kurdish proverbs evoke many domains, Kurdish speakers usually struggle to understand their meanings and identify their facets. At this juncture, the question posed is: Is the meaning of a proverb based on the domain in which it is embedded? To that end, the study adopts Cognitive Semantics approach in analyzing the selected domains. One crucial assumption is that aspects of human cognition shape linguistic features. Applied to Kurdish, it is hypothesized that proverbs are not often meaningful without a larger framework, which consists of related concepts that represent experiences. As for data collection, the study relied on reliable sources such as Shekh Mohamad Khal (2007), Ali Marouf Sharazoori(2010), Hoshyar Noori Lak (2011), and Karim Sharaza (1983). As for data analysis, the study adopts a qualitative introspective approach. The study then aims to identify the role of cognitive domains in the semantic construction and configuration of proverbs. Precisely, the aim is to reduce the degree of misunderstanding and misinterpretation of the proverbs while they are being used. One interesting finding is that one cannot understand the meaning of a proverb without access to all the essential knowledge that relates to that proverb.
Volume 12 · Issue 1 · February 2025A Cognitive - Semantic Study of Conceptual Metaphors and Conceptual Metonymies in The USA Electoral Campaign
Bahra Raouf Salih, Suhair Safwat, Shilan Ali Hama Sur
This paper aims to provide a cognitive semantic account of the conceptual metaphors and metonymies in the USA electoral campaign of 2020. Conceptual metaphor theory and conceptual metonymy are applied as the framework for the study. It focuses on how conceptual structures contribute to different meaning constructions in each datum. Specifically, the paper looks at two American political speeches delivered by Joe Biden and Donald Trump as heads of the list of their parties. Based on its quantitative, qualitative and comparative analysis within a cognitive semantic framework, this study argues that conceptual metaphor and metonymy help effectively to convey different viewpoints of both politicians in presidential election campaign. Finally, this study has concluded that conceptual metonymy is the most common tool in the English corpus data. Both conceptual metaphor and metonymy have great role in meaning construction through mapping between source and target domains.
