The Linguistic Study of Swearing in Selected American Movies

Mohammed Hussein Ahmed Bapir

This paper deals with the subject of swearing in American movies through stylistic and linguistic analysis models in two movies: one from the action genre and the other one from the romance genre. The paper studies key questions in relation to whether the genre, theme, and tenor of a movie have the influence of the frequency, types, and functions of English swearing expressions. In addition to that, the study examines the impact of gender type on the use of swearing within the texts used in these movies. This was based on the hypothesis that differences in swearing frequency, types, and functions arise due to both the genre of the movies and the gender of the characters in the movies. To address these questions, the researcher has developed a theoretical framework for swearing in English language. Two movies were selected with an adopted model, and the statistical tools were used to calculate the frequency and percentage of swearing expressions in the analyzed texts. The findings of the study reveal that the frequency, types, and functions of English swearing are significantly influenced by the movie's genre and tenor, as well as by the gender of the characters. These results form the basis for a set of conclusions drawn at the end of the study for further studies.

Aram Omar Esmaeel, Zanyar Faiq Saeed

This paper examines Maya Angelou's poem "Our Grandmothers" to expose the oppression of African-American women through the lens of intersectional feminism. It scrutinizes their complex experience by revealing the interconnectivity of class, race and gender in Angelou’s poem. The study reveals the complex aspects of the oppression that African-American women have undergone. The chosen theoretical framework for this study is intersectional feminism, which recognizes that different types of oppression simultaneously affect each other. As a result, the oppressed obtain unique experiences at the intersections of multiple identities. In this case, the study focuses on how African-American women's experiences of oppression are influenced by their class, race, and gender. In "Our Grandmothers," Angelou's literary voice becomes a powerful conduit, amplifying the profound struggles African-American women endured in American society. The research uncovers the intricate ways these women have navigated and resisted systemic oppression by closely analyzing the poem. The poem serves as both a reflection of historical realities and a testament to the resilience of African-American women. This paper is significant because it provides a better and deeper understanding of the oppression that African-American women have historically suffered. It does not present their history of oppression but demonstrates the application of intersectionality to examine a poem by Angelou instead. By focusing on how class, race, and gender intersect within the poem, the study reveals the complexity of these themes and their expression in literature.

The Image of Women from the Perspective of Popular Proverbs

Alia Faraj Mustafa

Kurdish proverbs are considered one of the cultural components that extended their influence on social life despite the technological and scientific development during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Therefore, the researcher identified the image of women from the perspective of popular proverbs as a study topic by focusing on three main aspects: the relationship between both genders, the status of women compared to the status of men, and women’s actions in various life situations compared to men. The researcher adopted the content analysis approach in analyzing the contents of the eleven popular proverbs, as well as adopting a gender analysis that focuses on the genders and their related roles and status as a theoretical framework for analyzing the contents of popular proverbs related to the topic of the research. The researcher relied on gender indicators: gender issue, gender bias, and gender discrimination to reach conclusions related to the research topic. It is concluded that: six of the popular proverbs correspond with the gender discrimination indicator which is attributed to dealing based on gender by giving privileges to men depending on gender stereotypical roles, and five of the popular proverbs match with the gender bias indicator which is attributed to all verbal and nonverbal behaviors directed against women based on the perception that men and women are not equal. Thus, they do not deserve the same rights and status.

Gender in Kurdish Education Program

Agreen Shawkat Hadi, Azad Ahmad Mahmood, Nareman Abdullah Kareem

Gender-related problems and gender diversity have always existed in schools. Many fields of school life are created around the role of traditional gender Schools play a key role in teaching and strengthening the dominant values of culture, particularly in gender. It is true that students go to school from day one, or kindergarten, known as their gender, and are called boys and girls. Their gender is constantly practiced through stories and free plays and interactions with teachers and peers. Schools are a place to seek special relationship with "best friends" in elementary school and "boys' friends" or "girls" about families and learn about relationships. These are the things that the community expects, and much of what happens at school is related to the gender side, which is why it is important for educators to have a strong understanding of how to deal with gender. This research is a way to raise awareness and show gender issues in the subjects of the education program. Research (in southern Kurdistan) is not sufficient to raise awareness of gender equality in schools. In this study, the texts (the third grade Kurdish reading book) are based on analyzing texts and images, and the results show that the Kurdish study program includes gender inequality. In other words, the image, role and duties of both genders are not taken into consideration equally. The results of this study are an attempt to take into account gender equality (text, images, tasks and roles) when the curriculum is set up.
