The Question of The Identity of The Refugee Character in Kurdish Novels

Mohammed Ahmed Hasan, Hawkar Qadir Rasul

The issue of identity is a contemporary issue, an issue that with the advent of modernism and postmodernism becomes the center of research in many fields. It covers issues of identity, gender identity, ethnicity and many other areas. Our research is working on the issue of refugee character identity. The anthropological, political, social, and psychological dimensions are important in this regard, because the person who becomes a refugee has been raised and educated within one culture, and when he enters another, he is confronted with similarities between me and the other. Obviously, the issues of human reality, refugees and the culture of migration are discussed in the novel. That is, in the novel, all subjects such as culture, identity and the other are reflected in the world we call the novel. In this context, Kurdish novels focus on the identity and character similarities of refugees and we have several novels on this subject. We study this subject from the perspective of cultural narrative. The refugee character in the environment in which he lives is constantly trying to adapt to the culture of the nation, because he has left his culture and identity and now must adapt to this new culture and not be seen as an apostate and find the environment in which he is a refugee and create a new identity for himself.

Identity and Symbols of Ancient Artistic Sculptures in Kurdistan Region

Hawkar Shukur Mahmood, Aras Ismail Khider

This research studies specific areas to discuss the identity of ancient sculpture and its artistic significance and Symbols in the Kurdistan region. The term "Stone Bar" refers to both two-dimensional and three-dimensional engravings on the face of rocks and mountains, achieved by taking small and suitable pieces of rocks and carving them to create sculptures with distinct artistic identities and meanings. Generally, the region between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers (Mesopotamia), namely the Kurdistan region and its surrounding areas, has inherited numerous rock carving artifacts. In addition to rocks, in some other civilizations, wooden carving artifacts have been left in this area due to the ease of obtaining wood from trees and transforming it into household tools and artistic materials at that time. Sculpture, on the other hand, refers to any statue created through construction or the addition of parts made from various raw materials, aimed at expressing different artistic themes and projects. This research represents an intellectual and aesthetic exploration of expressions and the discovery of identity and artistic meanings in ancient sculpture works in Kurdistan. The research also relies on artistic, social, archaeological, and geographical dimensions of the archaeological areas from which the research sample is drawn. It involves examining, recording, and analyzing the characteristics, shapes, signs, and symbols of the research sample's sculptures, as well as the method of classifying their identities and artistic meanings. This is done in order to open new avenues for achieving the original artistic identity of ancient sculptures in Kurdistan.

The Language identity in Kurdish proverbs

Pareshan Khalid Sabir, Sirwan Jabbar Amin

Despite the fact that language is an integral part of the personal and social identities of any nation, it contains other dimensions of national identity such as culture, religion, history and politics. It is a known fact that language is a national wealth because language is a source of memory, tradition, thought, feelings and passions of people. It is a historical archive of words, phrases, terms and expressions. In other words, it is the history of those ideas, events and feelings that have become words, sentences and terms that are preserved in language. Every expression in language signifies an idea outside of itself. Therefore, it is safe to say that language of any nation represents its true identity alive. This research has been conducted under the title “language Identity in Kurdish Proverbs”. Many language characteristics can be shown through research on the content of Kurdish proverbs. To do so, those proverbs have been selected that directly or indirectly represent language. In doing so, one can be familiarised with the Kurdish view of language in terms of its use, guidance and education. This research is an attempt to gather information about the Kurds by the Kurds themselves rather than external researchers. For that purpose, descriptive and analytics methods are employed to interpret the content of the proverbs that contain language identity. The incentive of the research is to uncover the verbal role of these proverbs in tracing the Kurdish language identity and in showing their Kurdish perspective on the concept of language.

Our research is backed by the theoretical subjects relevant to the post-colonialism approach and the concepts and aspects the approach relies on that are deviation from sticking to a certain identity and the conflict that identity creates with crises aiming to reach stability and keeping the identity of Iraqi individuals. The National identity in Kurdish proverbs

Pareshan Khalid Sabir, Sirwan Jabbar Amin

Identity is intimately related to people’s understanding of “who they are,” “what they are,” and what matters to them. This understanding depends on a number of factors. Identity also creates similarities and differences between individuals or groups. In fact, the emergence of identity is the emergence of similarities and differences between oneself and the other. That is, when someone says I am that person, that family, that nation, he says I am different from this and that and the others. National identity is an individual's sense of affiliation with a nation. Geography has its impact on language and national identity. Without this geography, called the country, states, cultures and civilizations could not exist. Lifestyles, forms of communication and languages have emerged according to the areas in which people live. This research is entitled “National Identity in Kurdish Proverbs”. Through the study of the content of Kurdish folk proverbs, many of the characteristics of the national identity and civilizational characteristics of an important part of the population of Kurdistan, especially in the center and south, can be known. This includes familiarity with the customs and traditions and the nature of the economic, social and political situation. This research is an attempt to get to know the Kurds through the Kurds themselves, not foreigners. This paper aims to demonstrate this role. The aim of this study is to show the role and characteristics of proverbs as some examples of oral means of expressing Kurdish national identity, because proverbs are the wisdom of human experience and a mirror of culture, opinions, norms and lifestyles. For this purpose, the method of "descriptive, analytical" has been used to interpret the content of the proverbs that carry national identity.

Unveiling Avant-Garde: A Study of Fady Joudah's Textu Poetry

Arwa Hussein Aldoory

The study examines how Japanese haiku poetry, which has been popular in American poetry since the turn of the 20th century, was revisited by Fady Joudah. The paper argues that current Arab-American poetry's avant-gardism is best shown by Joudah's appropriation of this poetic form in his poetry collection, Textu. Joudah’s new poetic genre tackles topics pertaining to the Arab-American identity in the digital era by utilizing avant-garde approaches. The suggestiveness of Haiku, which emphasizes the visual picture, word accuracy, and clear diction, is brilliantly appropriated by Joudah. The paper significantly demonstrates how a smartphone can condense pages of invocations and disclosures. It contends that Jouda's text message-like poems, which are each restricted to 160 characters, may most effectively capture the hurried spirit of the twenty-first century represented by its growing use of cell phones’ texting and twittering.

Afrocentric Study of Black Female Identity in Alice Childress’s Wine in the Wilderness

Shokhan Rasool Ahmed

African American playwrights always tend to manifest their African heritage and culture (Afrocentrism) through their plays. In other words, Afrocentrism means African centered-ness. Afrocentrism or Afrocentricity basically focuses on Africans and places African history, heritage and culture at the heart of any analysis. One of the Afrocentric writers is Alice Childress whose texts generally center on the devastating effects of racial discrimination, sexism and classism on women of colour. This study is principally concerned with the one-act play of Alice Childress, Wine in the Wilderness, which was written in 1964 and was first performed in 1969 in Boston, Massachusetts, as part of the series, “On Being Black”. In Wine in the Wilderness, Childress is bound by history and tradition since several references can be found in the play that considers Africa as a homeland and wellspring of strength. This paper investigates some questions such as: how does Alice Childress employ the Afrocentric value in the play? What is the purpose of Afrocentrism in the play? Who best represents Afrocentrism throughout the play? This paper delineates that Tommy, as an undereducated heroine and as a true Afrocentrist female in the play, is proud of her black culture and her blackness.
