lawko Amir Muhammad, Saman Salah Saber
This paper aims to apply the theory of semantic fields to Surat (Fussilat) in the Holy Qur'an via analyzing the meaning of words, classifying them and showing the linguistic and semantic differences between the words in each semantic field. Classifying these words into groups of similar or related meanings can provide new concepts and research tools in the area of linguistics which assists researchers to discover various aspects of meaning. The lexical level is considered a significant difficult level in the study of meaning since words may have close meanings, or the same word can have more than one meaning. Consequently, this paper attempts to clarify how these fields impact the comprehensive interpretation of the Qur'anic text. It also attempts to show the types of relations among the words employed in in the Holy Quran in each semantic field including synonymy, hyponymy, part-whole relation, antonymy, opposition). Understanding these relations can also help to interpret the Quranic texts more deeply and richly to convey the intended messages and rules, which assists to accurately and comprehensively understand the Quranic meanings. Thus, via applying the theory of semantic fields to Surat (Fussilat) and classifying its words into different semantic fields it was concluded that the multiple contexts in which the words occur can lead to a change in the linguistic and semantic interpretation of the word in different parts of the selected Sura in addition to the variety in the type and size of semantic relations within the fields.
