Dynamic Identity

Hazhar Othman Abdalla, Zanyar Kareem Abdul

This research focuses on the dynamic and fluid identity of the protagonist of The Reluctant Fundamentalist (2007), a novel by Mohsin Hamid (1971-). It claims that the protagonist’s identity is continuously reconstructed with extrinsic and intrinsic ruptures through the lens of postcolonial theory because it provides a framework to analyze identity formation process, particularly the concept of Orientalism by Edward Said (1953-2003) with dual identity and psychological split by Frantz Fanon (1925-1961). The research discusses how the protagonist’s identity is shaped by the global power relations, racial mistrust, and power conflict in America after the 9/11 attacks. It analyzes some of the crucial scenes of the novel and demonstrates how Islamophobia and Western stereotyping generate a crisis in which belonging as well as subjectivity are at stake for Changez in his double consciousness toward resistance. His journey from a New York-based corporate elite to an opponent of American imperialism in Lahore is a tale about decolonizing both political and personal aspects. The form of the novel, as a monologue directed at an American man, emphasizes the ways in which identity shakes under the pressure of fear and suspicion. Furthermore, this research contributes to broader discussions of migrant identity, postcolonial resistance, and the capacity of literature to undermine dominant ways of seeing and treating the Other.

Recording the Sunnah and the orientalists' suspicions about it - a critical study

Jawdat Anwer Majeed, Othman Muhammad Gareeb

Suspicions regarding the Prophet’s Sunnah and its codification are numerous, including those of the Orientalists. Considering that the Prophet’s Sunnah is the second source of Islamic legislation, it is necessary to respond and eliminate any suspicion raised so as to prevent the realization of those malicious aspirations. From this viewpoint, I provide an overview of Orientalism at the beginning of my paper, delving into the reason for their interest in creating suspicions about the Sunnah and its codification. I have devoted the first chapter to discuss the stages of codifying the Prophet's Sunnah, by clarifying it in three stage, as the codification of the Prophet's Sunnah passed through three stages, namely: the stage of codification during the Prophet's era, then the codification during the era of the Companions, and then the codification during the era of the followers Also known as Al-Tabeen. In the second chapter, I define suspicion and the term Orientalism linguistically and as an idiomatic concept, then I mention a group of suspicions raised by the Orientalists and address them. Finally, the paper concludes, through this modest research, the importance of responding to the suspicions of the Orientalists about the codification of the Prophet's Sunnah, and that silence and failure to respond to their suspicions increases the gravity of these suspicions, especially in this age, where there is great exposition, many views, and abundant suspicions raised about Islam as a religion, and about the Sunnah and The Prophet as a reliable source in this true religion.

Misrepresentation of Orientals in Dave Eggers’s A Hologram for The King

Samal Marf Mohammed

This study deals with the colonial perspectives in Dave Eggers’s A Hologram for The King (2012), according to the postcolonial approach. Although colonialism era is over by now, colonial perspectives remain strong in some literary works. Since its advent in the second half of the twentieth century, postcolonial theory confronts colonial attitudes and experiences as colonialism has been justified in many works of Western writers and scholars who have distorted the real image of non-Europeans and non-Westerners via different means and techniques in masquerade of orientalism. Postcolonial discourse opposes the misrepresentation of non-Europeans and argues that such falsification is driven by political, social, religious and economic motives. In the current study, the researcher aims at explaining the notions of colonialism, otherization and other falsified images of non-Westerners in A Hologram for the King. This paper mainly questions Eggers’s portrayal of the protagonist, Alan Clay, who after bankruptcy and failure at home, flies to Saudi Arabia and capitalizes on the physical and moral assets of the Orientals in this country to convert his story of failure to a success. The characterization of the oriental world and its setting show Eggers’s being biased against the Eastern world and ironically mirror clear hints of colonialism and eurocentrism.
