Violence Between the Imagined Image and the Embodied Image

Dilshad Mustafa

Recent studies have indicated that a large part of the life of human societies in general and Eastern societies in particular is dominated by violence, and one can say that it has become a feature of the daily scene or part of the picture that we must see every day. This violence takes different forms and reaches public spaces in several ways. We see that media, social media, movies, and stories are full of various kinds. This phenomenon can be an influential force that puts our lives in even greater danger if it is not dealt with in a correct scientific framework. In particular, images of trauma were fully embodied. This occurred when image occupied a lot of space and became an important part of people's everyday lives. Most social media platforms are gradually moving away from words and moving towards images as a powerful means of expression, the effects of which are clearer, faster, and stronger. It is clear that extremist groups have resorted to producing images of violence and tyranny to deal with people's minds and create psychological and emotional pressure. Dealing with the power of embodied images in the formation of impressions requires strong theoretical support that can explain the pressure exerted by the momentum of the embodied image on people's minds from different angles, and monitor how they obey their commands in the spirit of creating another kind of supposed reality that these groups want to impose as embodied reality. This study examines the power of violent images, their effects on the recipient’s soul, and the factors underlying the production of these images, and attempts to compare them with the imagined images that are formed through oral or written narration away from the embodiment and its effects. It also explains the strength and dominance of the embodiment in front of the imaginary. The questions in this study revolve around the assumption that narrative images in various literary fields, or oral narrative mechanisms, are transformed into represented images, processed through advanced cinematographic techniques, and try to explore the differences in the forced installation and the impact on the recipient.

Violence as a Coercive Tool to Establish State Control in Harold Pinter’s One for the Road

Lona Dlshad Mohammed Amin, Rebwar Zainalddin Muhammed

After Harold Pinter became a member of PEN and Amnesty International in the early 1980s, he grew interested in global politics and started to openly speak up against human rights violations present in several countries of the world. Then, in 1984, he published One for the Road, which is considered his first overtly political play. Taking place in an unnamed country and historical period to preserve its universality, the play portrays the torture and violence practised by totalitarian regimes against political dissidents. This study examines the use of various forms of violence in the text and analyses their role as the means to establish state control over nonconforming individuals, break their will and coerce them into submission. For this purpose, a socio-political approach is used by employing the Norwegian sociologist Johan Galtung’s theory on violence. The detailed analysis of the play reveals that tyrannical systems dehumanise and debase noncomplying citizens using political ideology as an excuse so that imprisoning and torturing them becomes justifiable.

Understanding Violence in Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities

Mohammed Rasul Murad Akoi

This paper, Understanding Violence in Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities, deals with violence in its various forms in Charles Dickens’ novel, A Tale of Two Cities. The novel recounts the French Revolution of 1789. In the novel, Dickens portrays a terrifying scene of blood and brutality. Violence appears in different forms. Critics have paid attention to Charles Dickens’ own fear of a similar revolution in England. The paper attempts to find the substance of that fear. The paper will discuss the three forms of violence in Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities; namely, violence as an inherent part of the French Revolution; violence committed by the crowds or mobs, and the evil that rises and grows as the Revolution continues. It will be argued that Dickens’ depiction of the crowd and mob behavior in A Tale of Two Cities captures the potential which is in the mentality of any crowd to grow violent. That is, a seemingly innocent start could lead to evil. A socio-psychological approach will also be consulted to analyze violence in the novel; violence as part of the revolution; violence committed by the mobs, and finally how the revolutionary masses turn evil.
