Abstract

Commercial activity is the most essential economic activity and plays a critical part in demonstrating economic growth in each state and society. There is no research about commercial activity in Erbil city in this period. This study looks on the commercial activity in Erbil between 1991 and 2003, and some factors which impact on it. The studies look at statistics and information gathered by the government to indicate the commercial change and expansion of the area. Following the 1991 revolt, Bazaars of the city became bigger and new bazaars opened such as Chrag and Second hand, Shekala Bazaar grew to become the city's most major commercial area. People flocked to bazaars for secondhand products since they were poor. Erbil city was involved in unlawful transactions (smuggling) with the Iraqi government and Iran. Erbil developed legal commercial links with Iraqi government territories in 1996, and the city also had strong external commercial relations with neighboring countries. This study examines important economic period of the city, which could help to solve economic issue nowadays.
